One of many young Scots recruited in the 1930s he suffered like most of them from lack of opportunities. Permitted only two first team games (at inside left and centre forward) he scored a goal but was not judged worth persevering with. His reserve record would appear to contradict this judgement. The season before his debut he scored 19 goals in 28 games and had hit eight in seven games when called up for the first team. This was after scoring a club record 38 goals for St Johnstone in 1931/32, which still remains their seasonal record. After football he became a cinema manager (Lochgelly Opera House) back in Scotland. A fine golfer he broke the record for the Cowdenbeath course with a 70 in 1939 which helped him win the West Fife Golfing Association Championship.
