After being rejected by Everton Bailey was given an apprenticeship by the Rovers. Initially the club could not make up their mind whether his future lay in defence or on the left wing, because he was speedy and ran with enthusiasm. Given an early debut he settled into the team at left back, forming with Kevin Hird the most adventurous full back pairing the club had ever fielded. Confident in everything he did and a cocky, ebullient improviser it was obvious that the arrival of freedom of contract would signal his departure, ironically to the club that had first rejected him. He gathered medals during his spell at Goodison but a move to Newcastle was fraught with personal problems. After a spell coaching at Everton he returned briefly to the Football League as assistant to Howard Kendall at Sheffield United.
