After appearing for Scotland Cameron joined the Rovers having been described as "fast, fearless, a capital kicker, excellent judgement, can give and take a hard knock. Combines with skill a rare amount of pluck and dash and possesses a clean and powerful kick." He proved to be as advertised but lost out to the youthful Arthur Cowell. Moving south he played in nearly two hundred games for Chelsea in a remarkably consistent career. During the war he became a publican in Hanley. He signed to play for Chorley after the war but did not play. He had moved back to Blackburn, working as a labourer and living in Hope Street, where he lived until his death. In an interview he claimed to have grown up in the same village and played with William Cameron in his youth but although they lived close to each other the story appears to have been invented. In one of his international appearances he wore a shirt with yellow and pink hoops., a one off change of outfit for the national side.
