A product of school football in Bootle, Campbell joined Liverpool during the war years but came to Ewood as the war ended. A right winger with no great speed or trickery he earned his place by graft and commitment. His conversion to wing half was natural given his physical abilities and this gave an ideal platform to harness his vigour and stamina. With Eric Bell and the young Ronnie Clayton at the club, competition for places was difficult but Campbell's adaptability kept him involved. After brief service with Oldham he returned to the Rovers, combining work with the club's reserves and youngsters with employment as a brewery representative.
