It took confidence to survive a debut in which he conceded six goals but the stylish goalkeeper was never short of this. Playing behind a team who liked to attack constantly he had to accept that he would be left exposed and he never let it trouble him. He gained a Scottish trial but more importantly was the goalkeeper in the 1928 cup winning side, his greatest moment coming in the semi-final when he broke Arsenal hearts with a perfect display. He struggled to gain a place initially because of the presence of Sewell and Cope but it was the arrival of Cliff Binns that ended his Ewood career. Desirous of first team football he was loaned to East Stirling where he sustained the injury that caused him to retire. He subsequently took over a tobacconists in Glasgow.
