An understudy to the famed W H Smith at Huddersfield, a promising Ewood career terminated abruptly when he was spotted fighting with team-mate Tom Wylie on the railway station after a shock cup defeat to the Corinthians. Fortunately he was able to arrange a transfer to West Brom, replacing Jack Crisp who had come to Ewood. At the Hawthorns, Byers played more than one hundred league games.
