After wandering from club to club in the early part of his career he was spotted playing for the Rest of the Lancashire League against Chorley. Although he was an inside forward he played his two first team games on the left wing. He achieved little and was soon released but went on to make over fifty Football League appearances. By 1911 he was a miner in Hemsworth although he later returned to live in Ashton, where he had married and worked for a crane manufacturer. His grandson became a champion crown green bowler.
