The "enfant terrible" of Rovers' goalkeeping Butcher had an ideal build, athleticism and had all the basics of a good goalkeeper. Occasionally he looked impressive but his consistency was poor, he was vulnerable from long range and he dropped crosses. It is one of the game's mysteries how he appeared in 100 games but there was always the belief that he was about to turn the corner. He was also an ideal club man, representing them with credit at local functions and training diligently. After his playing career ended, he worked as a warehouse manager for his brother in law, John Waddington, and played for a junior club with his son Ryan.
