Clennell’s father died when he was young but his mother re-married to James Smith, a slater from Tunstall. A precocious talent he came to Blackpool and in a short spell made such a reputation that he was only signed for a considerable cost. At Ewood the cool, creative footballer was unable to compete with the likes of Latheron, Aitkenhead and Davies but demonstrated with Everton that he could play well and score goals and played for the Football League. He lost his best years during the war but helped Cardiff to promotion and then wandered around cutting his teeth in coaching and management. A spell as coach at Accrington in 1934 helped convince him that security was best outside of the game and he had a public house in Blackburn before moving to Blackpool. He died tragically in the town, knocked down by a car on Norbreck Hill Road, as he tried to cross. At the age of 38 he scored a hat trick for Rochdale in the cup tie with Crook.
