Discovered during the war years he received little chance with the Rovers where Joe Hodkinson was a fixture. He moved to a lower division with Nelson and obtained an astounding goal tally, 174 goals in 183 games. So settled that he did not wish to leave the north he turned down offers from better clubs until at the end of his career he joined Swindon, where he played well. Returning to Blackburn he kept the Station Hotel in Cherry Tree. Born in Church but raised in Oswaldtwistle he was the ninth of ten children. His father Richard was a labourer for a stone mason and Joseph worked at Howard and Bulloughs.
