The recipient of a reward from the Hotspur comic for his schoolboy achievements in football, athletics and basketball his prowess was duly noted by his local club. Achieving international honours at youth level and playing in the FA Youth Cup semi-final he appeared to have great potential. Small but stockily powerful his quick darting style was difficult to counter but his potential remained unfulfilled. He arrived with the Rovers over a Christmas programme when the club had few resources and no money. An immediate hit because he scored on his debut at Burnley he then undermined the good work by missing a penalty in the same game. The Rovers were interested in prolonging his stay but not at the asking price of £20,000 and Fear spent the rest of his career moving down the football pyramid whilst moving on the field to a midfield position. In 1986 he went back to Bristol City as their lottery manager and also acted as assistant manager at Mangotsfield.
