Forever remembered as the brother of the legendary Ronnie Clayton, Ken was considered the better prospect as a schoolboy. He would have joined Preston North End but the club rejected Ronnie, who was a year younger, so his father sent the pair to Ewood. A year later Ronnie had matured rapidly and made his first team debut but it was to be more than a year later that Ken did the same. At home on the left hand side, he was a tough tackling industrious player with great consistency. The brothers had established themselves at wing half when, in 1957, Ken Clayton broke his leg in a jarring tackle. Although he remained at the club until 1961 he never again saw much first team action. After helping Ashton win the Lancashire Combination Second Division championship and Combination Cup he joined Great Harwood, but figured less and less before deciding to quit the game in 1966.
