The double signing of Butt and Jock Wightman in January 1937 was one of the key building blocks that led to the club's promotion in 1939. After a stuttering career where he had dropped out of the Football League and worked as a stonemason, playing part-time with Macclesfield, Butt had rehabilitated himself in Huddersfield. Even so it was a surprise that Blackburn had acquired a complete inside forward who could forage effectively and keep his winger supplied but also displayed a previously hidden talent for clinical finishing. There was serious conjecture that he would play for England but the war prevented this although the player kept active enough playing for both Manchester clubs, Huddersfield, Wrexham, York, Chelsea, Stockport and Aldershot. Football's resumption came too late to enable to further his career but he moved into management at Mossley and then his hometown, Wilmslow.
