Although he was a young man Chappell had built a reputation at Rotherham as a mobile goalscorer. He was never comfortable in his role at Ewood but proved at Reading that he was a natural predator. When he finished playing he became youth team coach at Swansea , and had the rare distinction of playing in the Welsh Cup for them at the age of 42. He was caretaker manager in 1984 when John Toshack left. Subsequently he coached at Newport County and Torquay United and managed Farnborough and Basingstoke. He finished in football after Torquay but remained in the area where he was involved in industrial cleaning.
