Only the second Blackburn born player to be selected for the England Schoolboy side his development was delayed by the Second World War. With a good left foot the blond player might have expected a long run in the side but the sudden appearance of Bill Eckersley forced him to search for a future elsewhere. Eventually he signed for Coventry which meant that he had to sell his shop in Oswaldtwistle but he had four good years in the midlands.
