The son of a miner from East Holywell, Shiremoor he became an apprentice at Leeds but was not offered professional terms. He was given a season's contract at Ewood after impressing on a short term contract, but although athletic and tough he proved erratic and inconsistent. He was named substitute for an end of season game but did not get on the field. His most memorable impact was the day when travelling to training from the north-east with team-mate Geoff Dale he was stranded in thick snow and was stuck in his car for several hours. He played one game in the Lancashire Senior Cup in which he was unfortunate to be responsible for a goal when he collided with his own goalkeeper, Roger Jones. His only other game with the first team was a pre-season friendly against the Bohemians of Prague.
