Brought in on loan from Southampton when still only a prospect he was substitute for one game but did not play. Although lacking in pace he proved to be a natural goalscorer who ended with 154 league goals in over 500 appearances before becoming the manager at Port Vale. One of the longest serving of managers at this level he eventually resigned in 2007. He was not out of the game long, becoming Wrexham’s coach in January 2008, moving up to joint caretaker manager in September and in November becoming manager of York City. He resigned in 2010 and later became first team coach at Bristol Rovers. In February 2012 he became joint manager of Northwich Victoria, with Alan Wright. In the summer he was appointed to be the Hereford manager. In May 2014 he became Southport's manager but left two month's later to takeover at Port Vale. Since then he has been head of recruitment at Northampton and chief scout at Motherwell.
