Dickins was discovered playing for Lincoln having failed to make the grade in Sheffield. A hugely built young man with all the apparent attributes for a goalkeeper he came to Ewood on the eve of the transfer deadline. His debut was traumatic from the opening moment when he failed to catch a huge punt upfield, to the final minutes when he misjudged a harmless shot that became the winning goal. Loaned out to recover his composure his erratic form reappeared at most of his subsequent clubs, with the exception of Blackpool. He ended his career at the country's oldest club, Sheffield FC.
