A native of Mill Hill, his father died when he was young. He made his first breakthrough with Darwen, where he forced his way into the side at the expense of McDermott, their star player. His speed and elusive nature made him a difficult man to contain which caught the eyes of the Rovers. They signed him at the end of a season and in the reserves with McAllister he looked such a good player that the Rovers were able to take a firm line with Fred Blackburn and let him go. Initially he played well but this was when his inside partner, Adam Bowman, was at his peak and when the Scot started to decline it was noticeable that Chadwick needed the prompting of a skilled inside man. Cartilage trouble hastened his decline and after returning to Darwen he emigrated to the USA, re-married and remained there until his death. His brother Tom played for Everton, Preston North End and Great Harwood.
