The son of a man who was a skateboard legend (European champion, four times British champion and manager of Team Extreme) ,musician and dancer (he backed the British entry Rikki in the 1987 Eurovision song contest), Danns  was nearly lost to sport in his teenage years when a bicycle accident almost severed his  Achilles tendon. Although brought up in the wildest part of Liverpool his parents managed to keep him away from detrimental influences and he signed schoolboy forms for Liverpool. However he agreed a traineeship with the Rovers, convinced that he would have a better chance of success away from Anfield. One of the best Rovers' youth team players ever, he captained the side in the 2001 FA Youth Cup final. A midfield playedrwho played with aggression and power he served an apprenticeship  playing wide right or as a striker but found a home in the centre of midfield. Although he made his debut in the UEFA cup tie against CSKA Sofia few opportunities followed and he was forced to obtain much needed first team football at Blackpool, although he exhibited a tendency to incur the wrath of the official  with two red cards in a three months loan spell. The following season he was loaned out to Colchester but as previously he found that the experience he had gained  did not produce first team opportunities when he returned and he took the offer of the permanent contract Colchester offered. Unsurprisingly he stood out in the third tier of English football and received the opportunity to move up when Steve Bruce signed him for Birmingham. His spell in the Midlands proved unprofitable but he re-established himself with Crystal Palace and turned down both Rangers and Celtic in the summer of 2011, preferring to sign for Leicester.
