Christie spent some of his early years in Upton Park when his father, a shipyard caulker, found work down south. A well educated man who coached two nights a week at Carnegie College, Leeds he was earmarked for leadership and was handed the captaincy when he established himself in the team. He was theoretically an ideal leader but he could not provide the inspiration of either Bob Pryde or Jesse Carver. Although he was said to tackle like an octopus, his career tapered out and he became an instructor at Castle Harwood Agricultural College. After retiring he lived in Malton, Yorkshire.
