A prominent schoolboy footballer in Manchester he gained notice in 1955 when he was a member of the city side that reached the final of the national schools' competition, gained county honours, represented the Manchester Catholic boys and was reserve for the England under 14 side. His local progress was obscured by the presence of Nobby Lawton and Roy Cheetham, who had better physiques. Johnny Carey saw the talent in his quick feet and shrewd brain and despite his obvious frailty was not afraid to bring him to Ewood. Among the junior sides he excelled, being best remembered for scoring the goal that brought the Rovers their only success in the final of the FA Youth Cup. Sadly the doubts about his lack of strength and durability were not refuted when he received first team opportunity at the Rovers and then Southport and he drifted into non-league football.
