Like all the products of the Workington club Black Diamonds, he was a hard man who impressed so much that he was selected for the Lancashire Combination representative side in his first season. A first team breakthrough followed but serious illness forced him to return to Workington to recuperate. Once fit again he returned to the Rovers but when he did not re-gain his place he moved on. He played his most regular football with Swindon and captained the side. He settled in the town and ran the Red Lion in Moredon until his death. His father, a dockyard labourer, died when Chambers was in his early teens and Peter started work in the steelworks to help support the family.
