Although born in Wales it was only because his mother was evacuated shortly before his birth and he grew up near Goodison Park. Taken into Liverpool's youth scheme he scored seven goals in one FA Youth Cup tie against Chester and was called up to Lilleshall in 1958 for a training session for the country’s best young players. However the odds on making the grade appeared stacked against a player who was not tall enough for a striker and not constructive enough for an inside forward. At Southport he found his niche and became a stalwart until the Rovers decided that he was worth a gamble to add depth. He never established himself but moved on to become a regular at Oldham. When his playing days were over he moved into the insurance trade where no doubt he was able to utilise the skill that brought him the PFA golf championship.
