When Tony Parkes said that his right back, Richard Brown, reminded him of Djalma Santos the great Brazilian, he was being less fanciful than it appeared. Brown had great skill for a defender, able to bring a high ball under control with one deft flick of the boot and capable of dropping a pin-point pass down the channel. He also lacked concentration and at times let his opponent lose him much too easily. After his career had failed to get underway he had become a printer and it was work commitments that caused complications in his transfer from Kettering. Carefully eased into the team he played well during the club's promotion to the Premier League only to lose his place to David May at the death. Serious health problems then restricted his opportunity and his career once again faded away. In between his spells in non-league football he has coached in Boyle County, Kentucky. A qualified FA coach he worked for a long time as a senior community sports development officer for Salford City Council. He was also a frequent team member of the Rovers’ veteran team.
