    Summary

Bond was signed by Preston after they bought him out of the army. He gained a reputation for tricky play and rocket shooting but despite his international selection Preston was never convinced of his durability, believing that his slight physique and great speed made him vulnerable to injury. It was this thinking that led to his departure to Bradford where he enhanced his reputation and his English caps. It also terminated his occupancy of the Hearts of Oak beer house in Adelphi Street, which he had commenced in 1906. Although he was nearly forty when he came to the Rovers and was only regarded as a stop gap he was never anything other than an admirable player who always pulled his weight. The move was a strange one since the Rovers’ fans disliked Bond intensely because they deemed him a player who often gave sly kicks to his opponents. During the war he was taken prisoner by the Germans, at Neuve Cheval, where he was captured whilst shaving. After he stopped playing he had a chip shop in Garstang and then ran a public house in Preston. He died in his sleep when he was resident at Queens Road, Preston.
