Nicknamed “God” by the Liverpool spectators, Fowler epitomized the Scouse dream, the disadvantaged youngster with congenitally bad hips, who rose from a council maisonette in Toxteth to become a millionaire with a huge property port folio. To achieve this he had to become a predatory forward in the English top flight, a deceptively innocuous looking player who could spot a chance and dispatch it clinically. By this time he carried the name of his father, a Liverpool railway worker, who came back into his life just before his teens. After ten years at Anfield it was a surprise to see him make a huge money transfer to Leeds but from this point his career took a downturn and he never settled at any club, including a return to Liverpool. It was a surprise when Paul Ince offered him a return to the Premiership because his performances at Cardiff had been punctuated by injury. The Rovers attempted to safe guard the risk by placing him on a short term, pay as you play contract, which proved to be a wise move for in half a season he never gave a hint that he was still equipped to play at the highest level. He remained connected to the game in Australia and in April 2019 was appointed coach of Brisbane Roar.
