The tough, dynamic wing half was one of the great servants of Preston, a man who scorned injury to drive the team on week after week. After over 400 games with North End he still managed over 100 with Blackpool, Southport and the Rovers, although not many with the latter where he was used as cover and for developing the reserve talent. Playing on he ironically received his first broken bone in his seventeenth season, a forearm when he was playing for Lancaster. He continued to live in Preston and became a shopkeeper in Holme Slack.
