The Rovers had a large scouting network in Cumberland and Westmorland and in June 1908 they brought in the Workington wing pair Ellis and Lawrie. Although he scored a goal on his debut it was believed that his wing partner, Garbutt, suffered from lack of service and so Ellis was consigned to the reserves and an ultimate return to Workington. The pair had been a revelation in Cumberland, their play being so much better than the local men that they roused a considerable level of antagonism.
