Born in Cube Street, Glasgow the son of an engine keeper, he was recruited from junior football and made a name for himself with the reserves, where his speed and power marked him down for elevation. Given an opportunity he struggled in a bad side and for the final critical games of the season he was replaced by the young Healless. Even so the decision to replace him was a surprise since his quick feet had always been admired and Bob Crompton believed that he delivered a centre as well as any winger. He enjoyed two good seasons with QPR but desired to live in the north. A season at South Shields included a historic FA Cup victory over the Rovers in which he played a full part but he emigrated to Canada where he went on to win international honours. He helped Toronto Ulster win the 1926 Canadian Championship.
