A Yorkshire lad from the Ilkley area, Dewhurst was conspicuous because of his height and his determination in the tackle. Hampered because the club had aspirations that prevented playing untried youngsters, he was loaned around before finally joining Hull City. Under manager Terry Dolan he became a corner stone of the defence and a frequent goal scorer with his powerful left foot at set pieces. Injury finally ended his career at Hull but he spent five seasons at North Ferriby whilst he worked as a postman. A fine fast bowler he played for Blackburn Northern during his stay in Blackburn. He settled down in Brough, East Yorkshire where he ran an after school club.
