There was never any doubt that the flaxen haired inside forward was going to be a great player. He captained the England schools' side and made his league debut for Bristol Rovers at the age of 15 years 173 days and when he scored a week later he became the youngest scorer in the Football League. A move to the First Division was inevitable but it was delayed because Dix had made a verbal agreement with Everton but subsequently decided he wished to join Blackburn. It was not until 1932 that Everton and Blackburn reached an agreement and Dix and his team-mate, Frank Britton, came to Ewood. An immediate success with his cultured play he formed with Arthur Cunliffe a deadly left flank, so good that a year later the penurious Rovers had to accept the offer by Aston Villa for the pair, causing outrage among the Blackburn fans. With Derby he gained his only international cap and although he lost so many years to the war, still appeared in over 400 league games. During the war he guested for a variety of northern clubs and won a Northern championship medal with Blackpool. After retiring he returned to Bristol and went into business.
