A towering centre back who had started his sporting career as a Gaelic footballer with Doire Colmcille CLG, he was signed by Everton when he was sixteen. He failed to make an anticipated breakthrough but a season spent with Yeovil was sufficient to prompt the Rovers to spend one and a half million in bringing him to Ewood. Although he commenced his international career with Northern Ireland he was one of several players who took advantage of the ruling that enabled them to switch to the Republic. Brought into the Irish side for the European Championships he returned to Ewood intent on a move. When an offer from Brighton was turned down his family made his discontent known on social media and when he contrived to score three own goals in ninety minutes and then get himself sent off it became obvious that he could remain with the Rovers no longer.
