It was a sign of the times that the Rovers had to borrow Downes to assist in a fight against relegation. He had been playing with Halifax but was about to be released and had never fully translated the goal scoring promise he had displayed with the reserves at Rotherham, into first team achievement. A big, energetic striker his physical qualities committed defenders but his technique and finishing were not of the same order. He performed for the Rovers exactly to his capabilities but was never a candidate for a permanent transfer. After working as a sales representative he opened his own electrical company in Leeds.
