A player at an early age at his father's club, Marton, Downing became a trainee at Middlesbrough. He exhibited outstanding ability on the left wing both for his ability on the ball and his technique with the cross that his career ascended rapidly both with club and country. Versatile enough to play in central midfield or on the right he was the subject of several high value transfers although for both club and country he always promised to deliver more than he achieved. He was out of contract at a time when Middlesbrough were making economies and decided to play for his former boss, Tony Mowbray, at Blackburn.
