Eccles attended Temple Moyle Grammar School where they only played rugby, and he played for the English schoolboys against Wales. However his footballing performances with Pudsey juniors brought him trials at Leeds and Chelsea. Eventually he signed for the Rovers where he was groomed to play centre half. His debut came at right back but it was as a stop gap striker that he made his reputation. A chance appearance as a substitute brought a career change and his worth as a hard, competitive player was to further his career longer than it might have done if he had remained a defender. For a time he was landlord of the White Horse in Upper Poppleton, York.In his retirement he moved to Mojecar in Spain.
