The son of a ploughman from Midlothian he had little reputation before he came to the Roversbut the stocky half back proved to be a real find, the heart beat of the club with a strong left foot and a great attitude when he and men like Killean and Anderson had to cope with mediocrity around them. He left after being warned that over-enthusiasm was causing indiscipline in his play but the Rovers regretted it when he starred with Liverpool before deciding to take the extra remuneration available in the Southern League. He moved back to Scotland to live in Fife where he had a butcher’s shop.
