A weaver who moved to Rishton he played for Rishton Wesleyans, when they were runners up in the Blackburn and District League and won the Accrington and District Sunday School League. He was signed by the Rovers at a time when the club's finances were poor and it was deemed he might develop. A miserable debut ensure that he received no other opportunity but a year later the club had not moved on and he was re-signed. At Accrington he was a key member of the side that won the Lancashire Combination in 1903, taking over from Joe Edmondson who had joined Manchester City. He remained in the local area for some time but was not as ubiquitous as reports appear to indicate. A goalkeeper of the same name from Turton played for several clubs including Darwen and Darwen Olympic. On retiring he became a landlord in Nelson and then had a hotel in Accrington. He married Nancy Ellen Sowerbutts whose father David was a cousin of the Rovers’ players Joseph and Richard.
