Clinton left Dublin to work on the Dundalk railway station when he was in his teens. Playing with the local side he attracted the attention of Everton whose chief scout, Noel Kelly, actually signed him on the station, the form being pushed through the train window as it pulled away. At Goodison he formed a sound partnership with Jones and earned respect as a reliable penalty taker, although he is best remembered for one he missed in the 1953 semi-final. The move to Ewood was a strange one since although he was known to be a classy player his chances of supplanting Bill Eckersley were negligible. After football he was a newsagent for a time before working in insurance. He lived for a long time in Walton and his wife and daughter both worked in the Everton ticket office.
