A war time debut with Sheffield United brought Brayshaw a hat-trick but he found it hard to gain a place and had a brief spell at Exeter. Unable to settle in the south he returned to play for Denaby and it was from there that he and his wing partner, William Cooper, were recruited although Exeter had retained his league registration. A scoring debut led to him being included in the first team when the next season commenced but the necessity of bringing in the free scoring Ted Harper led to a re-shuffle and he moved on to Southend where he scored five goals in 13 appearances.
