When Bow was a teenager the Rangers trainer, Jimmy Wilson, persuaded him to try his luck in Irish football. He had a successful trial with Cliftonville Olympic and signed professional terms but he was unable to find work and returned home to play for St Bernards. He soon attracted the attentions of the scouts and the Rovers had to overcome competition from Rangers, Celtic and Middlesbrough to bring him to Ewood to replace Peter Somers. It was optimistic to expect an inexperienced man to act as playmaker, especially for a team as undisciplined as the Rovers and it was not long before he was playing junior football in Lancashire. He worked at the ROF in Blackburn until 1915 when he enlisted with the RFA. He died in his home in Bradshaw Street after a long illness
