At the age of 17 Davies became the sole support of a family of seven. The 14/6d per week he earned in an engineering works was insufficient and so he took to the roads selling pots and pans which earned him his nickname. Fearless and ruthless on the football field he launched his small frame and terrorised goalkeepers with his shoulder charges. He scored striker's goals, nipping in to dangerous areas close to goal but also goals for the connoisseur where he ran from deep beating man after man. Once asked to repeat a startling goal for the benefit of the new movie camera he obliged until walking the ball into the net he trod on the ball and fell. A business man from an early age he was for twenty years a partner to Bob Crompton. In March 1917 he returned on leave from service with the Mechanical Transport Corps in Malta to marry Edith Cotton, the niece of the Rovers' chairman having already commenced work in the family cotton business.
