Dennis had a trial with Denton when he was 17 but joined the Cheshire Regiment where he became a sergeant gymnastic instructor. During his army service he was based on Merseyside and played for Tranmere and the Birkenhead Comets who went a long time unbeaten. He started to play at wing half for Stalybridge but the club had dropped out of all l eagues and were able to let him join the Rovers. Converted to full back he was given little opportunity but went on to make more than 300 league appearances with Stalybridge, Manchester United, Wigan Borough and Chesterfield. In the summer he was a seam bowler for Milnrow and assisted Cheshire but it was when he moved into the Huddersfield League that he broke all records. With Elland and then Kirkburton he five times took 100 wickets in a season and in 1948 was given a presentation when he took his one thousandth Hudddersfield League wicket. He became trainer at Mossley in 1934 and played one first team game for them. He died at the age of 55 in the Ashton under Lyne hospital.
