Having dropped back into non-league football with Horden Colliery, Fenton was shrewd enough to qualify as a draughtsman and found employment in Blackburn when he was signed so that he was only a part-time player. This probably retarded his development because when he left for York he matured into a sharp, penetrative player with a sound shot and unusually for a left winger of the day, a definite goal scoring flair. He score 31 goals in his first season and retired with over 100 goals to his credit. The player of the year at the club still receives a trophy named in Fenton's honour. His son, Stephen, was a professional footballer with Bradford City. His fleetness can be gathered from his clocking of 10.4 over 100 yards in an official race.
