At the time Duncan was signed the club regularly took on young Scots with a view to developing them. He was drafted in as Kennedy's deputy but made little impression and two years later was at Carlisle. His misfortune continued there. When he was set to make his debut the club decided to publicise their new signing hoping for a larger gate than usual. They got it but unhappily the weather was bad and the game was postponed at the last moment. In Gillingham he at last found some fortune and made over fifty first team appearances. His son William signed for Preston North End in 1957.
